For a coherent €5,000 kit with a mirrorless camera body and several lenses, €60 a day is a cautious assumption in France. Hired for 70 days a year, it generates around €4,200 in revenue. That is not profit: maintenance, insurance, payment fees, social contributions, tax and the value of your time still need to be deducted. Occupancy matters more than a high price displayed on an almost empty calendar.
Demand comes from content creators, freelance videographers, wedding photographers, small production teams and businesses with an occasional shoot. Needs vary widely: a backup body for a wedding, a fast lens for a weekend, a complete video kit or equipment to try before buying. Specialist equipment can command a higher day rate but hire out less often. Compare like for like: a body alone, lenses, batteries, cards, cage, audio, lighting and support do not offer the same value.
The calculator scenario allows 5% of the equipment value for annual maintenance, around €250 on a €5,000 fleet, and close to €500 in fixed costs, mainly insurance. Also allow for cleaning, consumables, small parts, transport, secure storage and gradual replacement. Technology depreciation is fast: a camera body may work perfectly yet become less sought-after when a new generation arrives. Keep a reserve for downtime or an uninsured repair.
Dedicated accidental-damage and theft insurance is essential in practice. Obtain written confirmation that it covers professional equipment hired to a customer, transported and used away from your premises; a standard business policy may exclude rental. Add suitable public liability cover. For a valuable kit, use a substantial security deposit or card pre-authorisation, stated before payment, without confusing it with insurance. A contract, serial-number inventory and jointly checked photos make a damage claim easier to handle, but do not remove an excess or an exclusion.
Start with a versatile kit that is in demand locally, then buy in response to documented refusals rather than personal preference. Standardise batteries, chargers, cards and lens mounts to reduce omissions. After every return, check the sensor, autofocus, stabilisation, connectors and shutter count; inspect each lens under raking light for scratches, impact marks, dust or mechanical play. Leave enough time between hires to clean, test a recording and format media once the customer has confirmed their files are safe.
Against a professional catalogue such as Pixloc or a P2P marketplace such as Wedio, a local independent can win on in-person handover, pre-hire testing and shoot-specific advice. Offer simple kits by use case, multi-day rates and clearly priced extras. Online booking prevents double promises and re-entering information from phone calls into spreadsheets; Louez.io can bring availability, contracts, payments and security deposits together. Finally, track margin by item, not just total revenue.
Around €5,000 can build a serious first kit with a camera body, lenses, batteries, cards and protective equipment. Add insurance, secure storage, cleaning and a repair reserve: investing everything in the camera makes the business fragile. Prioritise in-demand, repairable models within one ecosystem. Starting with a versatile kit lets you test local demand before buying a cinema camera, telephoto lens or several mounts that are harder to keep hired out.
Yes, it is essential in practice, even where no single policy is automatically required for every unregulated rental business. Check written cover for accidental damage, theft, transport, storage and, above all, equipment hired to a paying customer. Add public liability insurance for third-party damage. Review excesses, wear-and-tear provisions and exclusions, especially unattended vehicles, humidity or use abroad. A substantial security deposit limits some risks but never replaces suitable cover.
Choose a structure that fits your country, expected revenue and cost base. In France, a micro-entreprise often suits someone testing a goods-rental business alone; it is generally a commercial activity taxed under micro-BIC when the relevant conditions are met. Formalities and bookkeeping are lighter, but purchases, repairs and insurance are not deducted at their actual cost. As the fleet grows, if you reclaim VAT or costs become substantial, compare the real tax regime or a company structure. Confirm your classification and circumstances with the French business-registration service or an accountant.
It can be profitable when the fleet is hired regularly and stays suited to the uses customers seek. Under the calculator assumptions, 70 days at €60 generates around €4,200 in annual revenue. After €250 of maintenance and €500 of fixed costs, about €3,450 remains before labour, payment fees, transport, social contributions, tax, breakdowns and replacement. The outcome therefore depends on occupancy, claim control and avoiding purchases with little demand.
There is no universal amount. The deposit should match replacement value, your insurance excess and insurer requirements, so it is often substantial for a valuable kit. Display it before booking and explain how the card pre-authorisation works, how long it lasts and when it is released. Check identity, contract, inventory and jointly recorded condition. Never retain card data yourself: use a payment provider designed for this purpose.
