The rental software you actually own
Louez's code is public: anyone can read it, audit it and install it on their own servers, for free. Use our cloud, host it yourself or let us run it for you — you'll never be locked into your own tool.
The same product as the Louez.io cloud. Nothing crippled, nothing hidden.
Why it matters
What does open source change for you?
You don't need to be a developer to benefit. Software with open code protects your business — here's how.
Full transparency
The code is public: anyone can verify how your data and your customers' data are handled. No black box.
Zero lock-in
The code stays available no matter what. The tool your business runs on can't vanish overnight or be taken away from you.
Your data stays yours
Self-hosted, your customers, bookings and contracts live on your own server. And on the cloud, everything is exportable at any time.
Improved in the open
Developers and rental operators read the code, report issues and propose improvements — publicly, on GitHub.
Three options
The same software, three levels of support
Every feature in every option. The only question: who runs the infrastructure?

For developers
Self-host Louez in minutes
One Docker command to try it, Docker Compose for production. Everything is documented on GitHub.
# Run Louez on your machine
$ docker run -d -p 3000:3000 synapsr/louez
# Then open http://localhost:3000
✓ Your Louez instance is live
Going to production
- Docker Compose with MySQL 8
- An SMTP server for transactional emails
- Environment variables documented in the README
- Optional S3 storage for your files
One-click deployment
Works with the deployment platforms you already use:
A modern, readable stack
Widely used, well-documented technologies — code that's easy to audit and evolve.
License
Apache 2.0 + Commons Clause, in plain words
An open license with a single restriction — and it doesn't concern your rental business.
You can
- Use Louez for free for your rental business, including commercially
- Modify the code and adapt it to your needs
- Install it on as many servers as you want
- Audit the code, line by line
The single restriction
- Sell Louez itself — as a hosted service, or through paid hosting, consulting or support built on the software — without a commercial agreement: that's the Commons Clause
In short: renting out your equipment with Louez, yes. Selling Louez, no.
Frequently asked questions
Is the open-source version really free?
Yes. The code is complete and free. Your only costs are your server (roughly €5-10/month at most hosting providers) and the time you spend on maintenance.
Do I need to know how to code?
For the cloud, no: you create your shop in minutes with nothing to install. For self-hosting, you should be comfortable with a server and Docker. In between, there's the managed option: Louez runs on your infrastructure and our team takes care of everything.
Is the open-source version limited?
No. It's the same code as the cloud: unlimited products, bookings, contracts, statistics, online storefront. The difference is everything around the software: hosting, updates, backups, emails and support.
Can I move from self-hosting to the cloud, or the other way around?
Yes. Your data is yours in both directions. Contact us and we'll help you migrate.
What exactly does the license allow?
Apache 2.0 with Commons Clause: free use, modification and self-hosting, including for a commercial rental business. The single restriction: selling Louez itself (SaaS, paid hosting or support based on the software) without a commercial agreement.
Why make Louez open source?
Because trust should be provable. You entrust Louez with your customers, bookings and contracts: you have the right to verify what the software does, and the guarantee of never being locked in.
Choose your freedom
Live in 5 minutes on the cloud, 30 seconds of Docker on your own server, or fully managed by our team.
