An e-bike bought for €2,500 and rented at €35 for 90 days generates €3,150 in annual revenue. Five bikes generate €15,750 before operating costs and tax.
In France, 22 million people cycle while on holiday, and more than 4 million cycle tourists rent a bike during their stay. Coastal areas, cycle routes and hilly destinations support demand, especially from April to October.
Allow 10% of the purchase price each year for tyres, brakes, drivetrain parts and repairs, or around €250 per e-bike, plus €400 in fixed costs. A battery commonly lasts 500 to 1,000 cycles before its capacity declines noticeably.
A compliant e-bike cuts motor assistance at 25 km/h. Professional liability cover and theft-and-damage protection are recommended. A rental agreement, photos and a €300 to €800 card pre-authorisation add protection but do not replace insurance.
Start with a few versatile sizes and standardised components. Offer half-day, daily and weekly hire. Campsites and tourist offices near a cycle route bring better-targeted customers than broad advertising.
Show live availability and accept online bookings instead of managing calls and deposits in spreadsheets. Louez.io can bring together bookings, agreements, payments and deposits. Leave time between hires to inspect every bike.
With five e-bikes at around €2,500 each, the core equipment costs close to €12,500. Add helmets, locks, chargers, workshop tools, wearing parts, insurance and working capital. Starting with three to five bikes lets you test local demand. Keep a reserve for batteries and repairs: a bike out of service in July costs both the repair and several lost rental days.
A compliant e-bike, whose assistance cuts out at 25 km/h, does not by itself require motor-vehicle insurance. For the rental business, professional liability and theft-and-damage cover remain strongly recommended. Also check transport, storage, lock and third-party damage cover. Set out the customer's responsibility and deposit in the agreement: neither replaces suitable insurance.
The right legal structure depends on your country, projected turnover and investment. In France, the micro-entrepreneur regime can be a simple way to test a rental business, but it does not allow you to deduct purchases or repairs or depreciate the bikes. Compare it with a sole proprietorship taxed on actual profit or a company as investment grows. Have your activity, VAT position and personal circumstances checked by an accountant or the relevant business-registration service.
It can be profitable if your location generates enough rental days. Under this calculator's assumptions, one bike generates close to €3,150 a year from a purchase price of around €2,500, before operating costs and tax. The April-to-October season concentrates the risk: poor weather or a low-visibility location can quickly reduce utilisation. Test demand with a small fleet first.
A €300 to €800 deposit or card pre-authorisation per e-bike makes customers accountable for damage, theft or missing accessories. Align the amount with the bike's value, your insurance excess and your rental terms. A card pre-authorisation avoids taking and later refunding the money. State how long the hold lasts, photograph the bike at handover and return, and support any charge with recorded damage.
