Start a Trailer Rental Business
Renting out trailers can become a worthwhile additional business because the equipment is simple, durable and useful all year round. Yet the job involves more than parking a trailer outside your home. You need to select the right gross vehicle weight rating, inspect every departure, check towing vehicles and organise returns without spending every evening on calls and messages.
This guide uses the calculator's scenario: a trailer costing around €1,200, rented at €25 per day for 80 days a year, with annual maintenance at 6% and close to €200 in fixed costs. These figures create a cautious forecast, not a guarantee of income. Your actual result will depend on your area, chosen model, competition and the number of days you are actually paid for.

Understand local demand before buying
Trailer demand does not depend on one season. Individuals need one for a house move, a recycling-centre visit, furniture shopping, material transport or garden-waste removal. Gardening and home improvement are busier in spring, while moves and bulky purchases support bookings throughout the year. Tradespeople may also have occasional needs when a vehicle is unavailable or a project needs more capacity.
Before buying, review offers within a practical radius: peer-to-peer listings, equipment-rental businesses, DIY stores and garages. Record each trailer type, gross vehicle weight rating, usable dimensions, accessories, daily price, deposit and reviews. Call if information is missing. The aim is not to copy the lowest price, but to identify models that are often unavailable and needs that nobody serves well.
- House moves, recycling-centre visits and bulky purchases throughout the year
- Gardening, green waste and small building projects busier in spring
- Occasional needs from tradespeople and local associations worth approaching
Set a budget and choose the right trailer
The scenario allows around €1,200 for a utility trailer. Add a coupling lock, spare wheel, straps, possibly a cover, and secure storage. In France, a trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating above 500 kg needs its own registration document and number plate. Also check its real payload: the difference between its gross vehicle weight rating and unladen weight.
To remain accessible, a trailer up to 750 kg can be towed with a category B licence while respecting the towing vehicle's and combination's limits. Above that, rules depend on the combined gross vehicle weight ratings and may require B96 training or a BE licence in France. Check fields F.2 and F.3 on the towing vehicle's registration document instead of relying on its size or power.
- A versatile trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating suited to the target customers
- Coupling lock, spare wheel, straps and cover as the use requires
- Level storage that is enclosed or properly secured
- Documents, serial number and invoices kept in one file
Choose a legal structure and suitable insurance
The legal and tax setup depends on where you operate. In France, renting movable property is a commercial activity compatible with the micro-entrepreneur regime. For someone testing the business alone, it offers simpler registration and bookkeeping, with contributions calculated from collected revenue. Check VAT and local business-tax obligations. Since actual expenses and depreciation are not deducted, compare an actual-profit regime as the fleet and costs grow.
The trailer's third-party liability must be insured while it is on the road. Up to 750 kg, it is often included in the towing vehicle's policy, sometimes after declaration, but this does not guarantee cover for damage to the trailer or theft. Your business also involves different drivers and towing vehicles. Obtain written confirmation covering rental to third parties, detached storage, excesses and exclusions. Professional liability insurance can cover damage connected to your business, without replacing vehicle and trailer cover.
Set prices that genuinely cover your costs
For a light utility trailer, French offers often range from €20 to €40 per day. The calculator uses €25, or about €2,000 in revenue for 80 rental days. Deduct 6% for maintenance, close to €200 in fixed costs, then social contributions, tax and contingencies. Volume, payload, cover, side panels, ramp and collection hours also change the service's value.
Build a short price list: day, weekend and optionally week. A longer-rental discount makes sense if it saves handovers, but it must preserve your margin. A €150 to €300 deposit is a useful benchmark for a light trailer; adjust it to its value and risk. Write down late-return, unusual-cleaning, missing-accessory and damage charges rather than inventing a penalty at return.
- A clear daily price that makes the offer easy to compare
- A weekend rate that accounts for two days of unavailability
- Deposit, late-return and cleaning terms explained before booking
- Options charged separately when they add cost or risk
Find your first customers without cutting prices
Start with a complete local listing. Show real photos, internal dimensions, payload, gross vehicle weight rating, connector type, accessories and collection hours. State the areas you serve and documents required. Precise content filters out incompatible vehicles and avoids ten messages before each booking. Ask for a review after successful returns, inviting customers to mention equipment condition and easy collection.
Listing platforms bring visibility when you start, but they do not replace a stable local presence. Build a business profile, a clear page and partnerships with garages, self-storage sites, garden centres, landscaping businesses and building-material suppliers. Leave a useful sheet with a booking link, not a vague commission promise. Recommendations work when the partner can immediately see which model is available and at what price.
Manage bookings, agreements, payments and deposits
Availability must be reliable. A booking blocks not only the trailer but also the time to inspect, hand over and return it. Before confirmation, request the driver's identity, licence, towing vehicle registration and information needed to check permitted weights. Never state that a combination is compatible without reviewing the registration documents and the trailer plate.
The agreement should state dates, price, deposit, cancellation, late return, authorised driver, use, maximum load, accessories, insurance and liability. Attach a joint condition report with photos of the side panels, floor, tyres, lights, drawbar and connector. Louez.io can centralise online availability, bookings, agreements, payments and deposits, avoiding duplicate entry across calls, messages and spreadsheets. Whatever tool you choose, test the complete journey on mobile.
- Before confirmation: identity, licence and towing-combination compatibility
- At collection: signed agreement, payment, condition report, photos and tested lights
- At return: inventory, documented damage and deposit released after inspection
Avoid mistakes that erase your margin
The first mistake is accepting any towing vehicle to avoid losing a rental. A category B licence does not make every combination compliant: gross vehicle weight ratings, gross train weight, payload, tow bar and insurance must be checked. Refuse handover if documents are missing, lights do not work or the customer plans a clearly unsuitable load. One day's revenue does not offset an accident or immobilised trailer.
The second is neglecting basic maintenance because a trailer has little mechanical complexity. Regularly check tyres, fastenings, bearings, lights, connector, floor, drawbar, coupling head and corrosion. Log each task and replace a part before it blocks a booking. The scenario's 6% yearly allowance is a forecast average; keep a reserve for unexpected repairs.
- Handing over the trailer without checking licence, weights and insurance
- Underestimating delays, inspections and customer communication
- Postponing replacement of a tyre, light or coupling component
- Buying several models before measuring real demand
- Confusing revenue, available margin and personal income
